Clarksville Police subdued Suicidal Man with gun who wanted a battle with Police

Clarksville Police DepartmentClarksville, TN – On March 16th, 2013, around 3:15pm, Clarksville Police responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun on Klines Alley who wanted a gun battle with Police.

Officer Patrick Wyatt was the first officer to arrive and saw an intoxicated 66 year old man sitting on the porch of a West Washington Street (Klines Alley and West Washington Street intersect) residence holding a rifle.

When the man saw the officer, he stood up and held the rifle in both hands, but never pointed it at the officer. A perimeter was set up to contain the man and officers evacuated neighbors in the surrounding houses.

Initially officers were able to establish dialogue with the man, but he discontinued talking with officers and, on several occasions, threatened to harm himself with the rifle.  The Crisis Negotiators and Tactical Unit were called out.

Negotiators were able to establish limited telephone communication through the assistance of a family member. But, that communication broke down and the man left the porch and began to walk around in the immediate vicinity of his house with the rifle.

Around 4:47pm, Tactical Unit members were able to subdue the man by deploying less-lethal rounds to the legs (commonly referred to as bean bag rounds). The man walked under his own power to the ambulance to be checked out by medical personnel.

The man was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and charges are being determined.
