Austin Peay State University plans activities as part of Disability Awareness Month throughout April 2013

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Walking to class, listening to a lecture, reading a sentence accurately or typing email are daily actions most people can do without thinking twice.

But for those who have disabilities, such activities can be a challenge. Their world is different.

That’s what the Office of Disability Services at Austin Peay State University wants people to understand. April is Disability Awareness Month, and activities are designed so that the public can see how different life with a disability is.

The month begins with a kick-off from 10:00am-noon, Monday, April 1st in the Morgan University Center, room 303 and 305.

APSU Assistant Provost Dr. Brian Johnson will reaffirm the proclamation in 2008, in which APSU President Tim Hall declared the month of April to be Disability Awareness Month at APSU.

Here is a list of other events planned for Disability Awareness Month:

Freedom Scientific Vision Awareness Event

9:00am-3:00pm, Tuesday, April 9th
Morgan University Center, rooms 303 and 305
Learn more about living with vision loss with hands-on demonstrations. Free learning sessions and lunch. This event is open to the public.

ODS Open House- CART Demonstration

9:00am-11:00am, Tuesday, April 16th
MUC, Room 114
Disability Services will host an open house with live Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) demonstrations. The campus community is invited to learn about the services provided for students with disabilities. Light refreshments will be served.

STAR Center Access Express

10:00am-2:00pm, Wednesday, April 24th
MUC plaza
Commonly referred to as “the STAR Center on wheels” by many staffers and consumers alike, the Access Express provides computer access evaluation, workplace accommodations, employer orientations and assistive technology evaluations to those in need of the services but who are unable to access them.

Chance to Dance

10:00am-noon, April 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th
Memorial Health Building, Studio B
This is an introductory dance program for youth between the ages of 8-13 with disabilities. Youth will learn basic dance skills, rhythm and creative expression. Participants will take part in a presentation on April 27th. This event is sponsored by the APSU Dance Program and the Office of Disability Services. Disability Awareness Month Tent at Fort Campbell

10:30am-1:30pm, Tuesday, April 30th
Austin Peay Center @ Fort Campbell
The Office of Disability Services staff will visit the Fort Campbell campus to meet and greet with students, faculty and staff.  Disability Awareness Month T-shirts will be distributed to APSU students with valid student I.D.s. The event is open to APSU students, faculty and staff who attend and work at the Fort Campbell campus.
