APSU Lady Govs Softball splits games with Jacksonville State Gamecocks

Jacksonville, AL – Kayla Davidson’s single into short center field in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the game winner, as Austin Peay State University’s softball team split its Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, winning the nightcap 4-2 after falling 6-0 in the opener.

Davidson, Burroughs and Ryan finished the second game with two hits each.

Austin Peay starter Morgan Brewer (5-5) completed the deal by setting down the Gamecocks (17-11, 4-1 OVC) in order in the bottom of the eighth to seal away the Lady Govs’ first conference win this season.

Brewer scattered seven hits over her eight innings of work, giving up two runs, while striking out two and walking two.

The Lady Govs led earlier in the game, taking a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Ryan to drive home Shelby Norton and Amanda De Vries.

Jacksonville State tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, 2-2, in the only inning of the game where Brewer permitted more than one hit in an inning.

Game 1 didn’t go as well for the Lady Govs, with Jacksonville State breaking a scoreless pitcher’s duel in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring twice.

Jessica Guy would lead off the inning with a single up the middle that was followed by a Sara Borders home run just inside the right field foul pole.

The Gamecocks added a run in the fifth inning, as they put together three straight hits after the Lady Govs had retired the first two hitters.

Ella Denes would get things going with an infield single and moved around to third base on a Krystal Ruth double down the right field line.

Guy followed with a single through the left side to drive in Denes, making it 3-0.

Jacksonville State broke open the game in the sixth, scoring three runs on its second home run, a three-run shot by Cadi Oliver to left field.

Austin Peay mounted its only scoring threat in the top of the seventh, when de Castro reached on a one-out error and moved to third on a double by Davidson.

But Gamecock’s starter Tiffany Harbin struck out the next two Lady Gov hitters to end the threat and the game.

Harbin would finish with 13 strikeouts, while walking only one.

Davidson’s double and a Marissa Lake third-inning single were the Lady Govs only hits in Game 1.
