Jacksonville State (12-14, 6-3 OVC) hit for the team cycle and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Second baseman Coty Blanchard had an two-run triple, designated hitter Paschal Petrongolo added a two-run home run and catcher Cal Lambert had a double to go along with a pair of singles in the frame.

Austin Peay (19-4, 4-1 OVC) cut the deficit in half with left fielder Cody Hudson’s two-run double in the first. The Govs closed within one run, 4-3, in the second frame thanks to third baseman Kevin Corey’s RBI groundout.

The Gamecocks quickly padded their lead with a four-run fourth inning as Petrongolo added a three-run home run to his tally.

Michael DavisAustin Peay catcher Michael Davis had a solo home run in the fourth, but it was the fifth inning that saw the Govs make their big move. Second baseman Jordan Hankins and first baseman Craig Massoni hit back-to-back home runs, off different pitchers, for the inning’s first three runs. Hudson followed with a double and then scored on shortstop Reed Harper’s single, tying the game 8-8.

Jacksonville State bounced right back with four runs in the sixth and a game-breaking five-run seventh inning to build a 17-9 lead they would not surrender. Seven of the nine runs came with two outs on the board as the Govs relief corps could not find the crucial third out to stem the rallies.

Cody HudsonFive of the Govs six pitchers surrendered two or more runs in the loss, but it was Ryan Quick (2-1) who was tagged for the loss after allowing four runs in the sixth inning and allowed a total of seven hits over his two innings. Reliever Tyler Rogers made first middle-inning relief appearance and surrendered his first earned runs this season, allowing five earned in the seventh.

Austin Peay’s offense recorded a season-high 17 hits one day after setting that high-water mark with 16 hits in the series’ second game. Hudson led the Govs with a 3-for-4, two RBI outing. Right fielder Rolando Gautier had a hit in each of his first three at-bats and was 3-for-5 on the day. Hankins, Harper and Torres each had two hits.

Jacksonville State pounded out 19 runs on 23 hits – six batters finishing with three hits or more in the contest. Center fielder Michael Bishop led the Gamecocks with a 5-for-7, three RBI effort. Catcher Cal Lambert was 4-for-6 with three RBI. Petrongolo finished the day 3-for-4 with five RBI and three walks, including a pair of intentional passes.

The offensive outburst made a winner of JSU reliever Graham Officer (1-0), who surrendered three runs on eight hits over 1.2 innings of work.

Austin Peay returns to action when it begins a four-game road trip with a 6:30pm, Tuesday contest at nationally-ranked Mississippi State.
