The Governors will be playing in their 2012-13 season’s most challenging event, a 15-team field that includes six teams—Texas Tech (26), Vanderbilt (38), Ball State (39), South Alabama (51), host Memphis (63) and Louisville (84)—that are ranked in the GolfWeek Top 100. It also includes three other teams—Southern Miss (103), the Govs (104) and UMKC (111)—ranked just outside the Top 100.

Perennial Sun Belt power Middle Tennessee along with Arkansas State, Western Kentucky also are entered while Cincinnati, Cleveland State, DePaul and Louisiana Lafayette round out the field.

Marco ItenNot only is the field strong, the par-72, 7,249-yard South course, once considered one of the most difficult when it was a regular Memphis PGA stop, owns a 142 slope rating. The course is highlighted by tree-lined and uncharacteristic elevation. In addition, the test that will be enhanced by cool mid-to-upper 40s temperatures along with expected 15-20 miles-per-hour winds on both days (36 holes, Monday, followed by 18, Tuesday).

“This will be a great opportunity for our guys to play a challenging golf course against a quality field,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “It will be the strongest field we play all year and we need to be up for the challenge.

“Colonial has hosted a PGA tour event in the past, and the 2011 Tennessee State Amateur. We feel very fortunate to play one of the best courses in the state.”

Dustin KorteThe Governors will feature a fivesome that showed strong in Louisiana last week. Junior Marco Iten, who has fashioned second- and third-place finishes in first two spring tournaments, enters the week playing his career’s finest golf. Senior Dustin Korte finished solidly in the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate while junior Anthony Bradley, who represented the Govs in the NCAA Regional last spring, is still seeking his spring’s best golf.

Redshirt freshman Korey Smith, who tied for third with Iten in Louisiana, and sophomore Tucker Wallace, who finished 15th in the Carter Plantation, also will represent the Govs.

“The five guys playing this week have all given us good rounds this year, so I feel good about their games going into this week,” Kayden said.
