APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Tennis

Clarksville, TN – A second hard-fought conference victory in as many days puts Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team right back in the thick of the Ohio Valley Conference women’s tennis race.

The Lady Govs knocked off UT Martin, 4-3, on an overcast Saturday at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

Austin Peay (6-10, 3-3 OVC) evened its conference record thanks to some solid across-the-board singles work against the Skyhawks. UT Martin, despite taking the doubles point with relative ease, never seemed able to get going in singles and fell to 2-10 (1-1 OVC).

After posing little resistance in doubles, the Lady Govs rebounded to take four of six singles matches, led by sophomore No. 1 Alison Carre. The La Tranche Sur Mer, France native took down the Skyhawks Ivon Simic in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) for her season’s 10th victory, and seventh of the spring.

Junior Andra Cornea continued her recent trend of three-set victories, knocking off Anna Winkelman 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Each of Cornea’s last four victories have been three-set affairs.

Sophomores Vanessa Tavares and Jovana Karac continued to pick up the lower half of the Lady Govs lineup. Tavares earned her team dual-season leading ninth victory, downing the Skyhawks Johanie Van Zyl (6-1, 7-6) in straight sets. Karac won her fourth match in her last five attempts, defeating Jessica Silva (6-2, 6-3) at No. 5 singles to secure the Lady Govs victory.

The Lady Govs hit the road for the final time in the OVC regular season when they travel to Murray State for an 11:00am, Tuesday, April 2nd match against the Racers.
