Coming off the most impressive regular-season tourney win in head coach Kirk Kayden’s nine APSU seasons, the Governors will be battling 17 other Division I programs, including host Arkansas State, in the 54-hole, two-day tourney, to be played on the par-72, 6,565 -yard RidgePointe Country Club, which holds a 132 slope rating.

It will allow the Governors to see six other Ohio Valley Conference schools—SIU Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois, Belmont, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin—in the event. Former OVC rival Samford also will be in the tournament along with a wide-range of conference schools representing the Big 10 (Nebraska), the Missouri Valley (Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Missouri State), Sun Belt (ASU, UALR, Louisiana Monroe), Southland (Oral Roberts, Nicholls State).

Anthony BradleyAfter out-dueling six Top 100 teams (Golfweek.com) a week ago, the Governors will be the highest-ranked team in this week’s tournament. The Govs moved up to 81st in the Golfstat rankings after last week, moving up more than 20 spots.

“This is strong field, but this should be a good chance to get a good look at many of the OVC schools for the first time this spring,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “This will be a good indicator where we as a team against the OVC.”

The Governors finished second in the Red Wolves tournament a year ago and four—senior Dustin Korte, juniors Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten and sophomore Tucker Wallace—of APSU’s five starters played the course in 2012. Freshman Chris Baker will be the Govs’ fifth man this week, with redshirt freshman Cleve Guinn traveling as the Govs’ individual.

Dustin KorteKorte earned his first medalist title in Memphis while Anthony Bradley tied for fourth, including 1-under on the final day, while Iten ended in a 12th-place tie, including birdies on three of the final four holes. Wallace tied for 29th as his game continues to ascend after a struggling fall.

“The guys are confident going into this week,” Kayden said. “Four of them have played the course previously and that should be a big help.”

After Sunday’s practice round, 36 holes will be played Monday with the final 18 coming Tuesday.
