APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Golf
Jonesboro, AR – For the first time in Austin Peay State University golf history, the Governors own five regular-season tournament titles.
The Governors finished off its second straight title—and third of the spring—by capturing the ASU Red Wolves Intercollegiate, Tuesday.
The Governors shot a final-round 291 to end at 857, 15 shots better than former Ohio Valley Conference member Samford (872). Southern Illinois was third (878) while newest OVC member Belmont (879) was fourth. The Govs now have won three times in four spring events. They finished the fall winning two of their last three tournaments. The Governors have one regular-season tournament remaining at Missouri next week before the Ohio Valley Conference championships, April 25th-27th. The 2002-03 Governors, who eventually won the OVC title, captured four regular-season titles.
“I told the guys to win five events in one season is pretty much unheard of with all the good teams there are, with all the parity there is,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “That is something that is extremely hard to achieve. It is hard enough to win one event, let alone five.
“To win five of the nine regular-season events but also never being out of the Top 5 in the ones we didn’t win, that is an amazing stuff. There are not many teams out there in the country that can say they have won five events in a season. Pretty impressive work by these guys right now.”
Also for the second straight week, the Governors have a tourney medalist. Junior Anthony Bradley shot a final-round 1-over 72 to finish at 209, two shots ahead of Samford’s Casey O’Toole—it was Bradley’s first tourney title since winning the OVC championship last spring.
Marco Iten finished in a tie for third at 1-under 212 after firing a final-round 1-over 72.
“I am really proud of Anthony,” Kayden said. “He made it a little interesting down the stretch but he just played really well in this tournament. He has been knocking on the door at a few tournaments and he finally got over the hump.
“Dustin winning last week and Anthony winning this week and you have Marco playing so well. It just says a lot about the depth of this team.”
Dustin Korte, who battled a sore throat on Monday, bounced back from illness to shoot a final-round even-par 71 for a 219 total, good enough for a 14th-place that also included freshman Chris Baker, who tied for second in tourney birdies (11). The latter fired a final-round 76, with two double bogeys on the back nine denting an otherwise strong tourney.
“It was a great team performance this week,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “We got off to a great start this performance and were able to build a big lead. We dropped a few shots coming in but we had a big enough lead to get the win.
“It was a great effort—two weeks in a row. Two team championship and two individual championships that is pretty hard to achieve.”
