Austin Peay (26-10, 9-4 OVC) led 3-1 entering the bottom of the eighth. Starter Casey Delgado began the inning with a strikeout but then surrendered consecutive walks and was forced from the game.

Closer Tyler Rogers entered and Southeast Missouri countered with pinch hitter Josh Meade, who laced a single into left center, pushing home a run and cutting the APSU lead to 3-2. Rogers then loaded the bases when he hit second baseman Jason Blum, but notched the second out with a strikeout.

P.J. TorresSoutheast Missouri (18-18, 10-7 OVC) then saw right fielder Derek Gibson hit a high chopper over Rogers head but seemingly towards shortstop Reed Harper. But at the last moment the ball hopped to the right, foiling the Govs defense and allowing the tying run to score.

The Redhawks rally continued when first baseman Matt Tellor lined a single into right center, driving home two more runs, giving Southeast Missouri a 5-3 lead before Rogers induced a groundout to end the inning.

Southeast Missouri closer Bobby Hurst struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to record his season’s sixth save.

Austin Peay had the better scoring opportunities early, but could not capitalize. A prime scoring chance was available in the third inning when APSU had two runners on and no outs but left fielder Cody Hudson could not advance the runners as he popped out on a bunt and right fielder Rolando Gautier was caught out at first base.

Jordan Hankins“We took ourselves out of an inning early and you can’t beat yourself like that,” said Austin Peay head coach Gary McClure. “That stuff comes back to haunt you and that’s exactly what it did. We walked guys with a two-run lead and we didn’t add runs and those things get you beat, especially in a tight ballgame. We didn’t deserve to win and they did.”

The Govs broke the scoreless tie in the fourth thanks to a Redhawks error. Designated hitter Michael Davis doubled with two out. Catcher P.J. Torres hit a high chopper to shortstop Branden Boggetto whose throw to first sailed high, allowing Davis to score. Austin Peay pushed the advantage when center fielder Dylan Riner doubled to deep center field, giving APSU a 2-0 lead.

Austin Peay extended the lead in the fifth as second baseman Jordan Hankins hit a two-out home run that cleared the wall in right, giving APSU a 3-0 lead.

“I believe we came out with a lot of intensity, but we didn’t execute in the third,” said Hankins. “When we get opportunities to score we have to score. We didn’t execute the way we wanted to and it came back to haunt us. It’s a tough loss but we have to come out tomorrow knowing we can win the series and find a way to do that.”

Delgado kept the Govs in the game early, retiring the first nine batters he faced. He received a huge hand from the APSU defense in the fourth after he allowed back-to-back singles to start the frame. Southeast Missouri left fielder Derek Gibson lined out to Riner in center field, but the Redhawks had the runners in motion and Riner threw back to the infield to start a triple play – the Govs second in 11 months.

Ryan QuickSoutheast Missouri kept plugging away and struck for a two-out run of its own in the seventh. Delgado again surrendered a two-out triple to Redhawks right fielder Clayton Evans and second baseman Jason Blum followed with a RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1.

Rogers (5-1) was tagged for the loss – and suffered his season’s first blown save – after allowing two runs on three hits and recording only two outs. Delgado ended the day with three runs allowed on six hits and three walks over 7.1 innings.

Southeast Missouri starter Will Spitzfaden (4-3) earned the victory after holding Austin Peay to three runs on 10 hits over eight innings.

Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri will conclude their three-game series with a 1:00pm, Sunday contest. Govs junior right hander Ryan Quick (3-2, 7.86 ERA) will square off against Redhawks senior right hander Trevor Kill (0-1, 4.75 ERA).
