APSU Lady Govs Golf led by Jessica Cathey’s one under par cruises by Belmont University Monday

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Freshman Jessica Cathey fired a 1-under 71 while senior Tabitha Beard shot a 76 to lead Austin Peay State University to a 309-338 dual match women’s golf victory against Belmont, Monday afternoon, in the third straight days of Lady Govs dual matches, this one played at the Clarksville Country Club.

Rolling off four straight birdies at the turn, Cathey shot a 3-under 32 on the back nine to go with a 39 on the front side. The 71 best’s Cathey’s previous best by three shots.

Beard, meanwhile, saw a superb round interrupted by a triple bogey 7 on the par-4 14th hole, when she had troubled eradicating herself from the lip of bunker. Beard, however, has elevated her game down the stretch much as she did a year ago.

Jessica Cathey“I thought we played great today.” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “Jessica played great—she had four straight birdies at one point.

“Tabitha also played great. I thought we just played well. Tala (Mumford, 79) struggled a little bit but found a way to get it in the hole. Lauren played well played, getting us an 83.”

Meghan Mueller rounded out the Lady Govs’ team score with an 88. Playing as individuals, Rachel Deaton shot an 82 while Holly Batey carded an 86.

Playing shorthanded because of an illness and an injury, Belmont was paced by Janet Stein’s 78 while Sydney Hudson came in at 82.

Tabitha BeardAs a result, the Lady Govs won two of three weekend matches, losing to Murray State by four strokes, Saturday, before downing Tennessee State, Sunday, in Nashville, TN.

“We played really well on Saturday, despite losing to Murray, which has a really good team. We struggled yesterday in Nashville, but that lit a fire under us today to really play well.”

The Lady Govs now will take momentum in this weekend’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament, beginning Sunday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson.

“The goal for any coach is to peak at the right time,” Robson said. “We have had a really tough spring. The reason we did these three (dual) matches was because of the weather. We have been able to take advantage of these three matches and help us get ready for this weekend.”
