After a runner-up finish in two of the last three Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championships, the Lady Govs are hopeful this spring season will help them get over the hump come fall.

“We’ve gained a lot of confidence that I feel will benefit us in the fall,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “I think the team’s mentality has changed this semester. We’re going to be a senior-laden team next year, and I think competing with everybody around our region helps establish us as a program. It’s a big step forward for us.”

As part of Austin Peay’s Celebration of Women in Athletics, the Lady Govs hosted Western Kentucky, April 6th. Juniors Morgan Zigelsky and Tatiana Ariza each scored a goal, as did recent transfer Gina Fabbro, in the Lady Govs 3-0 victory. Junior Haylee Shoaff and freshman Nikki Fillippone split time in goal for the shutout.

Last weekend, the Lady Govs traveled to Bowling Green for a pair of tilts against the Bruins and Blue Raiders. Zigelsky and juniors Natalia Ariza and Andy Quiceno scored against Belmont in a 3-2 victory, while Fabbro scored the tying goal and Joceline Quiceno netted the game-winner in the final minutes to lead Austin Peay to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Middle Tennessee.

“While the spring isn’t as results-driven as our fall schedule is, these wins are giving our girls confidence and helping them develop as players,” Guth said. “I hope this keeps them motivated throughout the summer so they can come back for camp in the summer well-prepared for the high level of play we need to display in the fall.”

The Lady Govs conclude the spring season against OVC foe Southeast Missouri, 5:15:00pm, Friday, at Morgan Brothers Field.
