Reagan Giving Circle at Austin Peay State University to have award luncheon

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Reagan Giving Circle at Austin Peay State University will award more than $8,500 in scholarships to 10 APSU female students during its award ceremony next month.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30am, Monday, April 29th in the Clarksville Country Club, located at 334 Fairway Drive, Clarksville. Tickets are $25.00 per person.

In addition to recognizing the scholarship student winners, the luncheon will honor Dee W. Boaz as the 2013 Women in Philanthropy recipient for her support of the recent APSU Mabry Concert Hall campaign.

Boaz retired in 1994 as editor of The Leaf-Chronicle newspaper in Clarksville, after leading the news organization to 135 state and national press awards. She also was the first female chair of Mid-American Press Institute, an organization representing daily newspapers of all sizes in 20 states from the Canadian border to the Gulf Coast.

Boaz is known for more than her professional success in journalism. She also has been a trailblazer in the community, having served on many boards and in several civic organizations. Most notably, she was a co-founder and graduate of Leadership Clarksville and a co-founder of the Museum Guild. She was a charter member of the Junior Auxiliary of Clarksville and served on an advisory committee that established the Robert Penn Warren Center in Clarksville, which preserves and promotes literature by significant local authors.

Currently, Boaz is a member of the APSU Acuff Circle of Excellence Community Advisory Board, the APSU Foundation and the APSU Woodward Library Society.

Featured speaker will be Christine Karbowiak, executive vice president of Bridgestone America and Bridgestone International and chair of of the Bridgestone America Trust, overseeing more than $2 million a year in charitable giving to area and nonprofit organizations.

The awards luncheon also will serve as a time to honor the namesake of the giving program, Dr. Carmen Reagan, first female dean of the APSU College of Business and an influential community leader, volunteer and philanthropist.

The Reagan Giving Circle was launched in the fall of 2011. The purpose of the program is to cultivate women as philanthropic leaders, create new and substantial funding via the support of women, identify opportunities emphasizing the educational enrichment of women, allocate funds based on majority voting preferences and accomplish change and celebrate the impact on women’s lives.
