APSU Governors Baseball sweeps Evansville Purple Aces

Austin Peay’s Tyler Rogers sets OVC Single-Season Baseball Record for Saves

Austin Peay State University Governors SportsClarksville, TN — Tyler Rogers picked up saves in both ends of Austin Peay State University’s baseball doubleheader, April 24th at Raymond C. Hand Park, to set a new Ohio Valley Conference single-season record – but more importantly help the Govs win both game against the University of Evansville 3-1 and 3-2.

The saves were Rogers 15th and 16th of the season – in 17 chances — for Austin Peay (30-12), as he broke the old OVC single-season record for saves set by Jacksonville State’s Todd Hornsby during the 2012 season.

In Game 1, the Govs would use the long ball to get out to a quick 2-0 lead against Evansville (15-27), with Craig Massoni blasting his team-leading leading eighth home run of the season out over the right field fence — that also drove in Jordan Hankins – who reached on a fielder’s choice.

Craig MassoniThe Govs would add a run in the bottom of the third inning, to make it 3-0, on a two-out RBI double to left field by Cody Hudson that drove in Hankins, who reached on a base on balls.

Hudson led all hitters in the opening game with three hits.

Evansville cut the Governors lead to 3-1, with its only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning.

Kevin Kaczmarski got things started for the Purple Aces with a one-out walk from Austin Peay starting pitcher Ryan Quick.

A wild pitch by Quick moved Kaczmarski to second base and a single by Shain Showers advanced him to third base.

Cody HudsonQuick would strikeout Jason Hockemeyer — for the second out of the inning — his last batter of the game, with Rogers being brought in to face Chris Pearson.

Pearson would greet Rogers with a single to score Kaczmarski, but Rogers got Kyle Pollock to hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning and the threat.

Pearson had two of the Aces four hits in Game 1.

Quick got the win, improving to 4-2 on the season, while Evansville starter Cole Isom took the loss, dropping to 2-5 on the year.

In Game 2 of the doubleheader — the first seven-inning doubleheader for Austin Peay since March 30th, 2008 versus Jacksonville State — Austin Peay would break on top with a run in the top of the third inning.

Matt Wollenzin got things started by getting into scoring position with a one-out triple down the right field line.

Tommy Hager would follow with a single into short right field that drove in Wollenzin to make it 1-0.

Wollenzin led the Govs with two hits.

The Govs would double their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth, with Hankins leading off the inning with his seventh home run of the season, over the left field fence.

Jordan HankinsEvansville would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Pollock worked a walk from Kevin Corey — moved to second on a ground ball — and score on a single by Kaczmarski to cut the Govs lead to 2-1.

Austin Peay would get the run back in the top of the next inning, with Hankins getting on base on an error by Purple Aces first baseman Eric McKibban to open the inning.

Hankins would move to second when Massoni walked, with both moving up a base on a one-out double steal.

Reed HarperReed Harper would then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Hankins to make it 3-1.

Evansville would make it interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring an unearned run of a throwing error by Brett Carlson and having the tying run at third base, but Rogers struck out Hockemeyer to end the game.

Kacy Kemmer (3-0) got the start and the win, as the Govs used six pitchers in the nightcap.

Austin Peay returns to action April 26th, as they travel to Richmond, KY to face the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels for a three-game OVC series.
