Austin Peay State University Men’s Basketball signs Ed Dyson

Clarksville, TN – Ed Dyson, who averaged better than 15 points per game as a sophomore in the famed Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Austin Peay State University.

A 6-4 wing player, Dyson averaged 15.1 points. 5.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game in his only season at Cloud, located in Concordia, Kan. He averaged 13.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg as a freshman at Clinton Junior College (Rock Hill, S.C.). After attempting just six three pointers as a freshman, he was 15 of 49 from three-point range at Cloud.

Like previous signee Markee Mazyck, Dyson also hails from Washington, D.C.

“Ed is crazy athletic,” APSU coach Dave Loos said. “He has good size and handles, which is a good combination in getting to the basket and finishing.

“I think he will be really exciting for our fans to watch. He is just one of those guys who just can bring you out of your seat.”

But it was more than Dyson’s athleticism and basketball ability that attracted Loos. His off-court demeanor and acumen equally impressed the Governors head man.

“He is just a terrific young man,” Loos said. “I can’t tell you the last time I enjoyed an official visit as much as I did in having Ed here. He comes from a family of pastors. He is just a delightful young man. I think he will be good for our team not just on the floor but off the floor as well.”

Dyson played his prep basketball at Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Md. As a senior, slashing his way inside, he averaged 20 points per game and was selected All-Metro Montgomery County. Two years later he has continued to evolve his play.

“He is stretching his game,” Loos said. “He has the ability to dribble penetrate. He is so athletic he can finish when he gets there.

“But he also appears to be a totally unselfish guy who is willing to give it up and get it to the open man. He looks like is just really having fun play out there.”

The Governors now have fortified their backcourt through the recruiting process, with Dyson and Damarius Smith signed as wing players while Mazyck is expected to challenge at the three position vacated by Anthony Campbell but also can slide inside. In addition, Fred Garmon was signed to strengthen the point guard position while fellow point guard Zavion Williams, who sat out last season after a transfer from Lipscomb, also was placed on scholarship.
