Clarksville Parks and Recreation announces Summer Youth Program

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Summer Youth Program will begin June 3rd with the opening of program sites and will end July 12th. This year’s theme is “It’s a Jungle Out There!”

The Summer Youth Program is a six-week day camp-type program that is offered each summer to youths, ages 6-16. Gyms at various locations are staffed with directors and assistants, who will help with playtime activities and provide free, instructional classes such as gymnastics and karate.

Parents can register their children for gymnastics and karate classes onsite during registration for the Summer Youth Program. Gymnastic classes are taught by skilled gymnasts and provide participants with a firm understanding of the fundamentals of gymnastics. Karate is instructed by trained individuals, who will present instruction to the kids in a fun, yet disciplined manner. Youth are sure to have fun and enjoy these classes that are offered free of charge.

School gymnasiums are modified to a “community center” setting with daily table games, tournaments, arts and crafts, and other special activities. Parents will be able to register their children the first day of attendance. Parental permission is required for participation in the Summer Youth Program.

Burt-Cobb Community Center, Crow Community Center, and Kleeman Community Center will begin registration on Tuesday, May 28th at 9:00am. Minglewood, Glenellen, Byrns Darden, Barksdale, Burt, Woodlawn and Northeast elementary schools will also host Summer Youth Program sites. School sites will begin registration on Friday, May 31st from 9:00am to noon.

The Housing Authority also will provide sites at Summit Heights and Caldwell Lane for the program. Caldwell Lane will be open from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Monday through Friday. All other sites are open 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Children must be picked up prior to closing. Program sites will be closed on July 4th in observance of Independence Day.

Children ages 6-12 will enjoy our “Explorer” sites, while teens 13-16 will have their very own sites for teens only at New Providence Middle School, Northeast Middle School and Moore Elementary School called the “Rec-ing Crew” sites. Parents of Summer Youth Program participants ages 13-16 must register their teen at the Rec-ing Crew sites.

The Summer Youth Program participates in the USDA Summer Lunch Program, which provides each child attending the program a nutritious lunch daily and free of charge.

Youth enrolled in the Summer Youth Program can participate in free swim days that are offered each Friday during the program. Each site has a designated a pool where children can swim free for two hours each Friday morning. Details for free swimming will be available at each site. There is no charge for this activity, but free swim does require parent’s permission. Transportation to the pool is provided from the gym sites.

In addition to the fun gym activities and no-charge swimming, a six-week tennis instruction session is offered. Pre-registration and parent’s permission is required. The sessions will be held June 3rd through July 11th and you can pre-register at the Swan Lake Tennis Complex from 9:00am-11:00am on Friday, May 31st.

Another program offered in which pre-registration is a requirement, is the six-week theatre workshop offered by The Roxy Regional Theatre. Beginning June 10th, young people will learn the fundamentals of acting and even participate in a theatre performance on July 11th at the Roxy from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. The program is offered to ages 10-16. Program spaces are limited, so hurry in to register. Registration will require a $30.00 fee, which can be paid at the Parks and Recreation Office or online at recpro.cityofclarksville.com beginning the Tuesday, May 28th.

After previous years’ popularity, an Archery class will once again be offered June 24 through 28 for ages 10-16 at Billy Dunlop Park. The Beginner class will be held from 9:00am to 11:00am and the Advanced class will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The cost for the week-long class is $10.00 per person. Registration begins May 28th at the Parks & Recreation Main Office or online at recpro.cityofclarksville.com.

Summer Youth Program also offers the American Twisters Tumbling camp. Campers ages 6-16 can learn to roll, flip and turn with instructor Kellie Olson, June 3rd-6th, June 10th-13th, or July 8th-11th from 9:00am to 11:30am at American Twisters Tumbling, located at 438 Kelly Lane. Cost of the camp is $40.00 per child. Registration begins May 28th.
