Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball head coach Carrie Daniels has turned to one of her former stomping grounds for the latest addition to the 2013-14 roster, signing April Rivers of Las Vegas to a letter of intent.
Daniels ties to the Las Vegas area originate from her two-year stint as an assistant at UNLV. Her discovery of Rivers also came with the benefit of rekindling a relationship with Bishop Gorman High School head coach Sheryl Krmpotich, who was an assistant coach at Austin Peay from 1992-96 – the final four years of Daniels’ collegiate career.Still Rivers has built her own impressive resume that caught Daniels’ eye. A 5-6 guard, she averaged 15.8 points, 1.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game as she led the Gaels to the Division I State Championship game. A three-point threat, she made 55 three-pointers as a senior and converted on 48 percent of her field goals. Rivers was named a second-team all-state selection by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“We are extremely excited adding April to the Lady Govs family,” said Daniels. “She is a combo guard who brings quickness, defense and a scoring mentality. April is a true competitor who wants the ball in crunch time. I know the program she’s been in, she has competed at the highest level and been coached by one of the best. She is a true winner.”
Rivers was highly regarded by ESPN’s Scouts, where she was ranked 79th nationally at the guard position and received a grade of 83.
