Austin Peay State University Governors Baseball gets first National Ranking

Austin Peay State University Governors SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team has broken into a national poll.

After sweeping UT Martin over the weekend to move to 38-13 on the season, the Govs earned a No. 30 ranking in this week’s NCBWA Division I poll for Austin Peay’s first national ranking in 2013.

It’s the first ranking in any baseball poll for an Ohio Valley Conference team since 2009, and Austin Peay’s first-ever ranking in one of the ‘Big Four’ (Baseball America, USA Today, NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball) baseball polls.

The Govs’ .745 win percentage is 15th nationally and would be the best in program history. The Govs’ 38 victories equal the 1998 squad’s school record for regular-season victories.

In addition to a ranking by the NCBWA, Austin Peay also received votes in this week’s USA Today/ESPN.com Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The Govs continue to build their case for an NCAA at-large bid should their quest for a third consecutive OVC Tournament championship be denied. In addition to the conference’s first ranking in four years, the Govs are sixth in College Baseball Daily’s Mid-Major poll and sport an RPI of 35 in the NCAA’s May 7 ranking.

Austin Peay has a chance to improve on all rankings when it travels to Memphis for its final mid-week matchup, 6:30pm, at FedEx Park. The Govs wrap up the regular season against SIU Edwardsville in a three-game set, beginning Thursday.
