Reconciliation Evangelistic Outreach Center to hold Summer Day Camp
As a member of the National Summer Learning Association, the purpose of this camp, called Summer Education Learning Fundamentals or S.E.L.F., is to prevent the “summer slide” and enrich the lives of children in the Clarksville community and surrounding areas. The main focus areas for S.E.L.F. are reinforcing reading, math, fitness, life skills and self-awareness, which are very important in a child’s development. Research from the Center for Summer Learning at the Johns Hopkins University shows that teachers spend a good deal of time in the fall re-teaching skills from the previous grade that were lost over the summer break. Students can fall an average of 2.6 months behind in math and reading. School age children need to stay academically active during summer break.“We really look forward to this camp, the children that attend and the growth they will achieve during this time. It is still our goal to incorporate everything from fitness, safety and fun to healthy eating and living, and we stand by that,” says S.E.L.F. Camp Coordinator Janelle Powell. “This is our fourth year and it means a lot to us to provide a great learning atmosphere for children. Our goal is to bridge the gap between learning sessions, character building, encouraging healthy self-image and having fun in a nurturing environment,” Powell adds of the camps attributes. The S.E.L.F. program was designed to be very affordable at just $40.00 per week. There is a $25.00 non-refundable registration fee and families with more than one child may qualify for scholarships and multi-child discounts. The camp will be held at R.E.O.C from 8:00am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday. Children will enhance their reading and math skills, participate in various creative art projects, learn Spanish, take field trips and learn important life skills all while having fun. R.E.O.C. Community Outreach is committed to making a difference in the lives of children. If you want to keep your child academically active this summer and provide them with a safe, positive environment to go to, register your child now for the S.E.L.F Summer Day Camp.
