The win for Austin Peay was the 14th in a row for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s 26th ranked team, while moving Austin Peay to within one win from a trip to the NCAA tournament for a school record third straight season.

Austin Peay would take advantage of some early wildness by Tennessee Tech (40-16) pitchers Ross Spurgeon and David Hess to score two first-inning runs without the benefit of a hit.

Both runners would move up a base on a fly ball by Craig Massoni, with Gautier coming in off a groundball out by Reed Harper with the first run of the inning – while Hankins also moved to third base.

Cody Hudson and Michael Davis would then reach on back-to-back walks to load the bases, with Spurgeon being replaced on the mound by Hess.

The pitching change didn’t help, as P.J. Torres became the third straight Gov to reach via the walk – which also forced in Hankins to make it 2-0.

Brett Carlson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved into scoring position by stealing second base.

Gautier would record the Govs first hit of the game, a single through the left side of the Golden Eagles infield, with Carlson moving around to third base.

After a groundout and a walk to Massoni, Harper would single through the right side of the Tech infield scoring Carlson from third to make it 3-0.

The score would remain that way until the top of the sixth inning, when the Governors scored three runs to go up 6-0.

Carlson would open the inning with a single up the middle and move to third base on a double by Tommy Hager.

Hankins followed with a single into left field, scoring Carlson and Hager, while moving to second base when the Tech left fielder misplayed the ball.

Massoni would close out the Govs scoring in the inning by driving in Hankins with a double, the Govs fourth hit of the inning.

Tennessee Tech would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring twice to cut the Govs lead back to four runs, 6-2.

Craig MassoniJames Abraham got the inning started with a one-out single and moved to second base on a passed ball by Torres.

Michael Morris then walked, followed by a single to center field by pinch hitter Tevis Sherfield to load the bases.

Zach Zarzour when singled into left center field to score Abraham with the Golden Eagles first run of the inning.

That would be the final batter of the night for Austin Peay starting pitcher Casey Delgado, as Kacy Kemmer came in to relieve.

The Golden Eagles would score their final run of the inning on a ground out to first base by Austin Wulf, scoring Morris.

Tennessee Tech would threaten on both the eighth and ninth innings, but Tyler Rogers – who came in to get the final out of the eighth inning held the Golden Eagles at bay.

Delgado (9-2) got the win, going six and a third innings, while giving up six hits and two runs with six strikeouts and three walks.
