Austin Peay State University’s Breigh Jones to represent APSU at USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team rising sophomore Breigh Jones will represent the Lady Govs at the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, beginning June 20th at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, IA.

Breigh Jones

Jones, who advanced to the quarterfinal round at last month’s NCAA Championship East Preliminary Round in Greensboro, NC, used her school-record 53.75 qualifying mark in the regional to gain entry into the championships.

She will be Austin Peay’s first-ever participant in the event. She enters the meet with the field’s sixth-fastest qualifying mark.

“I am extremely proud of Breigh,” said Austin Peay assistant coach Valerie Brown, who will travel with Jones to the event, “She has worked very hard to be in this position. As a coach, my promise to my athletes is to prepare them to be the best they can be, but when you have an athlete like Breigh who puts so much heart into it, the sky is the limit. We are definitely building champions here at Austin Peay, and Breigh is a prime example of what the future holds.

“She beat some of the best athletes in the region in her first appearance at the NCAA Regional. She’s earned this opportunity to be among the best again at the Junior National meet, hoping to capture a spot on the U.S. Junior National squad.”

Jones will face an old nemesis in Des Moines. SIU Edwardsville’s Jessica Oranika was placed third in the 400m dash at May’s Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships but did not qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

The first round of the women’s 400m event will take place at 1:55p.m. (CT), June 21st, with qualifiers moving on to the semifinals scheduled for 7:36pm that night. The 400m finals are scheduled to take place at 1:46pm, June 22nd, with the top six finishers eligible to represent the United States in the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia.

The USATF will provide over 50 hours of coverage on USATF.TV, which is scheduled to go live this week.
