Clarksville, TN – If you have visited Dunbar Cave State Park lately, you will have noticed that the back plaza area has been dug up and is mainly a pile of dirt. This area is being prepared for a Butterfly Garden.
When Dunbar Cave was bought in 1973 and turned into a state park, the area in front of the bath house of the visitor center was a swimming pool. However, the pool was in such disarray that is was not economical to fix it. So the state decided to fill it in with dirt.
A plan came together about 3 years ago to build a Butterfly Garden out there. So this year, the park began work on the garden. The dirt work was started this summer. There is more dirt work to be done.
“There are terraces that have to be put in. We have a mud garden that has to go in the center, because butterflies really like mud,” stated Seasonal Interpretive Ranger Shawn Settle.
“The planting will take place this fall. We will have trees to be planted and flower blubs,” said Settle. “By this spring, it will be our full fledged Butterfly Garden.”
