Topic: “Sterling Price’s 1864 Missouri Campaign”

Confederate Army Major General Sterling Price

Sterling Price’s 1864 Missouri Campaign was the Confederate attempt to retake Missouri and influence the national elections of November 1864. Social and political considerations shaped and mediated the strategic and logistical considerations of both sides.

The Confederate Army for the invasion was entirely mounted and had not only veteran troops but also veteran commanders. Their Union foes, from commanding general of the Department of the Missouri William S. Rosecrans down to division commanders, were also veterans, as were many of the troops.

A key and often overlooked element was the Enrolled Missouri Militia, a force of dozens of regiments and thousands of men called into Union service, many of whom also had combat experience. Missouri ranked no. 3 for the number of Civil War battles on its soil, and Price’s campaign provided some of the largest ever fought there.

This fascinating campaign featured barbarity in the killing of prisoners and civilians; the heroics of the Union garrison of Pilot Knob escaping certain destruction to get back to Union lines; and a vacillating Confederate command whose objectives would change as the campaign progressed.

University of Cincinnati professor Dr. Mark Lause specializes in nineteenth century American social and labor history. Lause has written books on the origins of the labor movement, antebellum land reform, and third-party movements of the 1870s, as well as books on early bohemianism and secret societies.

These interests also informed his books on the Civil War, which include: Race & Radicalism in the Union Army (2009); Price’s Lost Campaign: the 1864 Invasion of Missouri (2011), and a forthcoming book, Price’s Raid (2014), which completes the account of the 1864 campaign.

He is also finishing books on the politics of spiritualism in the Civil War period and a history of the labor movement during the war years. Dr. Lause will have copies of his book on Price’s Campaign for sale at the meeting.
