APSU Lady Govs Soccer drops preseason game at Alabama, 4-1

“I thought we had more positives than negatives tonight,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “A number of players got on the field, including a lot of freshmen getting their first look. I thought we had a lot of good back and forth.”

Gina Fabbro got Austin Peay on the board just after the first period break; the Lady Govs and Alabama played three 30-minute periods in this match. Senior Andy Quiceno slotted the ball through to Fabbro inside the box and the Canadian, who joined the Lady Govs during the spring, found the back of the net for the match’s opening salvo.

“Coming out of the first break, we scored really quickly before changing up the lineup,” Guth said. “I was pleased to see us come out and attack quickly.”

That would be all for the Lady Govs, with Alabama’s offense capitalizing for four consecutive goals.

“We gave up several goals on set plays, which gives us a good indication of what we need to work on,” Guth said. “That will be something we look at this week. I thought Katie Emig and Nikki Filippone both did well; it was a nice first outing for Katie, she saw a lot of pressure and made several good saves.”

Austin Peay returns to campus for a week of training and two home exhibition contests, against Evansville (Wednesday, 7:00pm) and Freed-Hardeman (Friday, 7:00pm) at Morgan Bros. Field.
