The Govs received 39 points in the poll, earning the same preseason ranking with the same amount of points as they did in 2012. Austin Peay was chosen ahead of Murray State (30) and Tennessee State (11).

Defending champion Eastern Kentucky (121 points, 11 first-place votes) was unanimously selected the preseason favorite, while Eastern Illinois (103 points) was picked second, where they have finished each of the last two seasons.

Belmont (97) and Southeast Missouri (95) are expected to push the traditional OVC cross country powers.

With only Tyler Kepley returning from the 2012 squad, head coach Doug Molnar has retooled his lineup, bringing in 10 new student-athletes he expects to use as a foundation for his distance program.

“With the amount of talent we brought in this year, it’s hard to judge us right now,” Molnar said. “A lot of it probably reflects on where we finished last season, but we’ll use this as fuel to motivate our guys this year.”

The Govs kick off the 2013 campaign Saturday, August 31st, at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic. Austin Peay is scheduled to compete in six meets this season, leading up to the OVC Championships, November 2nd, hosted by Morehead State in Morehead, KY.
