Nashville Sounds lose Saturday night 12-7 to Albuquerque Isotopes

Nashville SoundsAlbuquerque, NM – The Nashville Sounds suffered their seventh consecutive loss on Saturday evening, falling 12-7 against Albuquerque at Isotopes Park.

Every starting Sounds position player recorded a hit during the club’s 13-hit effort, paced by a 2-for-5 Eugenio Velez effort that included a homer and extended the infielder’s on-base streak to 27 consecutive games.

The Sounds grabbed a 3-0 first-inning lead, scoring on a passed ball and two RBI groundouts, before Albuquerque countered with two runs in the home half of the frame on a pair of run-scoring singles.

Velez led off the third with his second home run of the year to make it a 4-2 Nashville leave but the ‘Topes evened the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning before plating four two-out runs against Aaron Laffey in the fourth to take an 8-4 advantage. Scott Van Slyke contributed a two-run triple while was followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Eliezer Alfonzo.

Laffey (6-8) was saddled with the loss for Nashville after giving up eight runs on 11 hits in just four innings of work.

Neither team scored again until the seventh, when the clubs exchanged single runs. Velez ripped a two-out shot to first base that scooted under the glove of Alfonzo to allowed Blake Davis to scored in unearned fashion. In the Albuquerque half, Chili Buss (4-for-4) led off with a single and later scored on a Jesus Sanchez balk.

Nashville pulled within 9-7 in the eighth with a pair of two-out runs off Onelki Garcia, but the Isotopes again responded to a Sounds rally in the top half of an inning with one of their own in the home half, plating three runs against the Nashville bullpen to bring the score to its final 12-7 standing.

All three runs in the inning came via a two-out, three-run Alex Castellanos roundtripper and were team unearned against the Sounds, although two of the runs were earned against Kyle Heckathorn, who surrendered the tater.

The Sounds put a pair of baserunners on in the ninth against Javy Guerra, but the right-hander closed out the victory by fanning Stephen Parker to nail down his tenth save of the year.

Nashville will look to avoid suffering the rare five-game sweep when the teams wrap up the series with a 7:05pm CT finale on Sunday. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (11-5, 2.97) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Matt Palmer (6-7, 3.72).
