APSU Governors Cross Country ready to bounce back at Powerade Invitational in Chattanooga

With only one returner and a roster littered with freshmen, the Govs will have lots to learn during the 2013 campaign, which continues with the Powerade Invitational, a 6:15pm (CT), Friday, at Moccasin Bend Race Course.

Austin Peay’s freshmen formed a tight pack but found the going slow at last week’s Brooks Memphis Twilight, finishing seventh out of eight squads in the 4.2 mile event. A trio of first-year runners – Alex Haycraft (46th), Daniel Hamm (47th) and Hunter Guthrie (49th) – finished within a second of one another.

Only senior Tyler Kepley returns from last season’s Powerade Invitational, where he earned a 17th-place finish – Kepley was forced out of last weekend’s run but will be available this weekend. The Govs were fourth as a team in last year’s race, ahead of OVC foe Tennessee State.

This year’s event will feature competitors from Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee and Austin Peay on the Division I level, with Lee University, Shorter University, Bryan College, Auburn Montgomery and Dalton State also scheduled to compete.

Austin Peay will run its third race in three weekend’s at next week’s Vanderbilt Invitational at Percy Warner Park, which will mark the mid-point of the cross country season. The men’s race is scheduled for 9:00am.
