APSU Lady Govs Cross Country look to build on strong debut at Powerade Invitational

Clarksville, TN – After a successful opening weekend at the Brooks Memphis Twilight in Memphis, Austin Peay State University women’s cross-country team travels to Chattanooga for the first of two meets on the Moccasin Bend course when the Lady Govs compete in the Powerade Invitational, 5:45pm (CT), Friday.

Austin Peay’s first trip to the Scenic City in 2013 comes on the back of a fifth-place finish in Memphis, led by senior Xiamar Richards’ 18th-place run (18:45.36). With three other Lady Govs in the top-40 last week – seniors Kendra Kirksey (26th), Kim Dominguez (31st) and Chantelle Grey (33rd) – head coach Doug Molnar seems to be armed with a deep, veteran squad for the 2013 campaign.

The Lady Govs finished third at last season’s running of the Powerade Invitational, with three top-10 finishers led by Richards’ sixth-place, 12:22.97 two-mile finishing mark – Grey (seventh) and Kirksey (ninth) also earned top-10 finishes. Austin Peay defeated a pair of OVC foes (UT Martin and Tennessee State) in that event.

This year’s event will feature competitors from Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee and Austin Peay on the Division I level, with Lee University, Shorter University, Bryan College, Auburn Montgomery and Dalton State also scheduled to compete.

Austin Peay will run its third race in three weekend’s at next week’s Vanderbilt Invitational at Percy Warner Park, which will mark the mid-point of the cross-country season. The women’s race is scheduled for 10:00am (CT).
