APSU Lady Govs Volleyball drops opening match to Virginia Tech Hokies; Jada Stotts out with injury

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUMurfreesboro, TN – A nip-and-tuck first set ended with junior outside hitter Jada Stotts suffering an injury and Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team could not recover, dropping the MT Invitational opener in three sets (21-25, 6-25, 16-25), Friday morning.

There was plenty of offense in the first set with Austin Peay recording 16 kills against Virginia Tech’s 19 kills. Virginia Tech took a 19-17 lead to force an Austin Peay timeout. The Lady Govs responded with a 4-2 run to tie the set at 21-21.

The Hokies scored the last four points and won the set 25-21. However, the set’s last point was the most damaging to the Lady Govs. Stotts landed at the base of the post while attempting an attack and fell to the floor. She would leave with assistance and returned to the bench, but not to the match.

Without its leading offensive threat, Austin Peay was staggered in the second set. The Lady Govs recorded just four kills in the frame while the Hokies rattled off 18 kills against one error en route to the 25-6 victory.

Austin Peay came out of the break with renewed energy and jumped out to a 6-4 lead as three different hitters posted a kill. Virginia Tech fended off that early burst and used 7-4 run to take an 11-8 lead. The Hokies pushed their advantage to 19-11 en route to the 25-16 win.

“Losing Jada will hurt us,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “However, it also is an opportunity for our other players to step up and make a difference. We have three matches left here and a lot to discover about ourselves.”

Sammie Ebright and Calyn Hull each had eight kills to pace the APSU offense. Stotts had seven kills prior to her injury. After recording 16 kills and only five errors in the first set alone, Austin Peay was held to 16 kills and committed 11 errors in the final two sets combined.

Kathryn Caine led Virginia Tech with 11 kills and a .769 attack percentage. Samantha Gostling chipped in 10 kills. Virginia Tech finished with 50 kills and a .484 attack percentage.

Austin Peay continues play in the MT Invitational with a 5:00pm contest against North Dakota.
