APSU Lady Govs Soccer’s Emily Kink named OVC Defensive Player of the Week

Ohio Valley Conference - OVCBrentwood, TN – Senior defender Emily Kink, of the Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team, has been named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Kink assisted on senior Tatiana Ariza’s go-ahead goal in the Lady Govs 1-1 draw at Western Kentucky, Friday, playing the full 110 minutes and anchoring an impressive Austin Peay defense. She also played the full 90 minutes in the Lady Govs 2-1, come-from-behind victory at Lipscomb, Monday.

“She is definitely a tremendous leader,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “She and Corey Osborn have really taken ownership of the back. She worked very hard for the ball she served in to Tatiana at Western Kentucky.

“Kink’s one of our hardest workers. She’s got an eye for the goal and great service strength. It’s a wonderful honor for her to be recognized.”

The honor is the second weekly OVC award of Kink’s career; she won an Offensive Player of the Week award in 2010.

After earning just six defensive awards as a team in the first nine seasons of voting, Austin Peay has two defensive honors in the first three weeks of 2013. Junior Shelby Olszewski took home defensive honors for the week of August 27th.

Austin Peay embarks on its New York road trip to St. Bonaventure (6:00pm CT, September 13th) and Buffalo (10:15am CT, September 15th) before returning home for the opening weekend of OVC play 7:00pm September 27th against defending champion UT Martin in a rematch of the 2012 OVC Tournament Championship contest.
