APSU Lady Govs Soccer drops double-overtime match to Buffalo 1-0

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUBuffalo, NY – In the final game of its New York road trip, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team ran up against a tough, defensive-minded Buffalo squad that got a late Golden Goal to take a 1-0, double-overtime victory against the Lady Govs, Sunday, at UB Stadium.

Austin Peay (5-1-1) suffered its first defeat of the 2013 campaign, snapping its program-best six-match unbeaten streak to open the season. Buffalo moves to 3-1-2 in 2013.

The Lady Govs were unchallenged in the first half; Buffalo did not put a shot on net in the opening period, while Austin Peay challenged Buffalo’s Ainsley Wheldon with attempts on net in the fifth minute, by senior Natalia Ariza, and in the 14th minute, by her sister Tatiana.

The Bulls turned the tables in the second half, crashing the Austin Peay net time and again. Austin Peay had a harder time getting meaningful looks in the second half, attempting just two shots and putting only a 47th minute attempt by sophomore Courtney Sheppard on goal.

Sophomore Nikki Filippone kept the Lady Govs in the match in the second half, making four saves. Her biggest stop came in the 66th minute, turning away a breakaway attempt by Megan Giesen to keep the match scoreless.

Overtime saw little more in the way of offensive chances for Austin Peay. Junior Claire Pultz’s attempt in the 103rd minute went wide, representing the Lady Govs only shot in either overtime period.

The Bulls netted the game winner in the 109th minute. Kristin Markiewicz found Karen McMahon at the back right post, where she slid a shot low under Filippone for the golden-goal winner. Filippone was otherwise brilliant on the day, concluding the afternoon with four second-half saves.

Austin Peay will have a lengthy break before the conference schedule heats up. The Lady Govs don’t play again until their Ohio Valley Conference-opening tilt against defending OVC Tournament champion UT Martin, 7:00pm, September 27th, at Morgan Brothers Field.
