Austin Peay State University Baseball starts fall practice, Monday

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – A revamped Austin Peay State University baseball team begins its fall practice slate with a 2:40pm, Monday team practice at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Monday’s practice is the start of a schedule that will see the Govs on the field 28 times in a 38-day span.

Austin Peay will practice at 2:40pm, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Govs Tuesday and Thursday practices begin at 2:30pm. Austin Peay will not have team practices on Saturdays and Sundays during the fall. All fall practices are open to the public.

Austin Peay has won three consecutive Ohio Valley Conference baseball tournament crowns and won the regular-season title in both 2011 and 2012. Govs head coach Gary McClure enters his 27th season with an OVC-record 799 career wins.

The Govs will return 16 letter winners from last season’s squad but will spend the fall seeking answers to fill the holes left by the departure of its entire infield, one starting outfielder, two members of its starting rotation and its closer – not an insignificant task. That makes this season’s fall practices especially important for an Austin Peay baseball squad that will feature 16 newcomers on its 35-man roster.

“I believe this fall is particularly important for our team,” said Govs head coach Gary McClure. “We have a lot of new bodies and we have to figure out where they’re going to fit on the field. I believe we have all the right pieces on our roster and I’m looking forward to seeing the competition on the field this fall.”

The highlight of the fall schedule is the annual Red-White World Series. This season’s intrasquad competition is scheduled to begin Friday, October 18th with Games 2 and 3 the next two days. After a two-day break, the series resumes with Games 4 and 5, Wednesday, October 23rd and Thursday, October 24th, respectively.

The Govs spring schedule, which will be released at the conclusion of the Red-White World Series, will begin Friday, February 14th.
