Mann Smith & Cummings Insurance - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – The sun shined over Swan Lake Golf Course and the 12 seasoned, top-notched golfers competing in the 2013 Mann, Smith & Cummings Insurance Senior Tournament of Champions Saturday, September 28th.

Flags flapped in the wind on greens that shone like polished jade under the sun as the elite seniors and super seniors (65 and older golfers) teed of early in the morning and later finished the first round of the tournament just after lunch time.

For these golfers both the competitors and the course are old friends.

Seven of the eight seniors and all four of the super seniors shot in the 70s on day one. Steve Blackwell and Greg Guinn emerged as the co-leaders at the end of round 1. Both fired a 1 under round of 70.

With 4 Birdies, Blackwell finished the front nine 2 under. He added another birdie at 17, and parred six of the back nine. Blackwell finished with just 4 bogeys on the day.

“It’s a prestige tournament, a lot of good golfers. All 8 of these golfers can play,” Blackwell said. “I’ll be excited tomorrow. Hope my body will hold up. Try to give Gregg a little competition over here.”

Guinn finished with only 3 bogeys in round 1, two on the back nine. He birdied 10, a difficult hole that Blackwell bogeyed.

“I was rushing this morning to hit some balls. A little chilly. Wind blew today. The greens, they were difficult today. The pins were in some pretty good locations. All in all it was a good day. I think I made four birdies and three bogeys. All in all not bad,“ Guinn said. “Its been a long year. I am really looking forward to coming out and playing well tomorrow and putting them up until next May.”

Brad VanKirk and Rick Richardson finished even for the day at 71. Joey Long and Jim Mashburn carded one over round of 72.

With seven of the eight shooting in the 70s, two tied at the top and four within 2 shots of the lead, the second round of the tournament will be a close race all day.

Harold Hensley led the super seniors with a first round 73. Bob Bracy finished just 2 strokes back, carding a 5 over 75. All the super seniors are within 4 shots of each other. (See all players and scores below).

“It’s always fun playing with these guys. They are good players and any one of the bunch has got a chance tomorrow,” Guinn said.
