Tennessee Archivists to hold Annual Conference in Clarksville

Nashville, TN - The Society of Tennessee Archivists will hold its annual conference October 16th-18th, 2013, at the Riverview Inn Conference Center in Clarksville, Tennessee.  This year’s theme:  STA2013: Listen Up! Discovering, Sharing, and Preserving Our Stories” will focus on oral history and folklife projects in the Southeastern United States.

“Oral histories are the purest form of history. They are a first-person account of events and must be preserved for future generations,” said Ralph Sowell, Vice President of the Society.  “Archivists provide future generations with an accurate study of the past, learning from the accomplishments of predecessors, tracing genealogical ancestry and maintain records in the public  trust.  State, County, and Private Archives help to improve citizen knowledge of their community histories.”

This marks the first time in thirty years the annual conference has visited Clarksville.

Participating sessions include the Oral History projects of the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Kentucky Folklife Project at Western Kentucky University; the Tennessee Folklife Collection of the Tennessee State Parks; historical photography demonstrations by the Vacant Chair Photography Studio of White Bluff, Tenn., the “Civil War Pinhole Camera Project” of photographer Michael Falco of New York City, and the Veterans Oral History Project of Austin Peay State University Department of History and Philosophy.

An all-day workshop on “born digital records” will be held by Dr. Christopher Lee of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The conference will also tour the restored Fort Defiance and its interpretive center, and Historic Trinity Episcopal Parish in Clarksville.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has proclaimed October 2013 to be “Tennessee Archives Month.”
