Rossview High School Lady Hawks Win District 10-AAA Volleyball Championship

Rossview High School HawksClarksville, TN – The Rossview Lady Hawks are the 2013 District 10-AAA Champions.

They defeated the West Creek Lady Coyotes 3-1 (25-8, 27-25, 25-6, 25-12) in an action filled Championship match at Rossview High School Saturday afternoon. Both teams will travel to play in Regional action later.

“They did really well,“ Lady Hawks head coach Jen Garinger said. “During the season I think West Creek would mentally let us get to them. I think they got over that and definitely proved they are the second seed in this district. Our girls just had to realize that they were not going to let up and they had to come back and fight harder.”

After taking the first set, the Lady Hawks lost a hard fought, dramatic second set to the Lady Coyotes. The Lady Hawks responded with a solid 3rd set and was able to take the 4th set and the match from the tenacious Lady Coyotes.

“In general there were ups and downs,“ Lady Coyotes head coach Joshua Stoeckal said. “The biggest issue against Rossview we had was unforced errors, us taking ourselves out of situations and not putting pressure on them.”

The Lady Hawks did not appear to have any pressure as they established a 10-3 lead in the 1st set. They took complete control of the set with an 8-0 run that made the score 24-7 and closed out the set with a kill by Mikah Koontz, assisted by Regan Comperry.

The 2nd set had 12 ties and 6 lead changes. The Lady Hawks made 14 kills in the set. The Lady Coyotes made 8 kills. Alex Wilkens led both teams with 6 kills in the set. The win came down to errors.

Janie White made her 4th kill of the set with an assist from Kamryn Carter to tie the game 25-25. Holding serve, the Lady Coyotes gained a point and the serve when the Lady Hawks setter was called for double contact. In the ensuing rally, Carter was set up for the kill but hit the attack long. The Lady Coyotes won the set on the attack error.

All the attacks that scored for the Lady Coyotes in the 2nd set, went astray in the third. Rampant attack errors gave the Lady Hawks extra opportunities to set up their attack and they took full advantage. White made 3 kills in the Lady Hawks 12-2 opening run. The Lady Hawks set up 10 kills in the set. The last was made by Koontz with an assist from Carter to make the score 21-5. Lady Coyote errors gave the Lady Hawks the last 4 points to win the set.

The final set was similar to the 3rd. Attack errors helped the Lady Hawks open with a large lead, 10-3, and they kept the Lady Coyotes from mounting a strong comeback. The Lady Coyotes generated just 4 kills in the last set.

With the Championship in hand, Garinger has her team already looking ahead to Regionals.

“We are really excited. We are looking forward to it,“ Garinger said. “We know it is going to be a challenge, but we are up for it.”
