Buchanan, TN – Junior Tucker Wallace shot an opening-day two-round 5-under 139 to sit in fifth place heading into the final day of the Skyhawk Fall Classic, being played on the par-72, 6,685-yard layout at Paris Landing State Park.
After shooting a 2-under 70 in the opening round, Monday, Wallace rebounded with 3-under 69 in the afternoon action.
“He just hit shot after shot, stayed even keel and grinded a smooth 5-under and has himself in contention to win this tournament.”
Senior Alasdair MacLennan (71-75) and freshman Erik Hedberg (70-76) are tied for 40th, shooting 146s. Redshirt sophomores Korey Smith (81-72) and Cleve Guinn (82-71) to end the first day at 153. Freshman Oliver Dickson struggled much of the day, shooting 160 (79-81). The tourney’s final round will be played Tuesday.
“All these guys either had under-par or close to under-par rounds,” Korte said. “That is exciting from a coaching standpoint to see them play that well, to see what they are capable of.”
Korte admitted he was a little nervous walking into the coaches meeting Monday, seeing faces of coaches whose teams he was competing against just last spring. But he quickly became comfortable once the tourney began.
“It is exciting for me, being helped the guys out whenever they need it,” Korte said. “I don’t know how much I really help them out but I do try to keep them calm that is all you can do.
”It is pretty cool, just being fresh out of college I would never have expected to be taking six guys over here to a tournament. I am honored that Coach (Kirk Kayden) trusted me to do this.”
