Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University, playing in its first home game of the 2013 season October 10th at Governors Stadium, saw Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Illinois University score touchdowns on each of its first four drives to help propel the Panthers to a 63-7 victory.
Eastern Illinois (5-1, 2-0 OVC) struck quickly to start the night’s scoring, needing only 80 seconds and five plays to go the 70 yards –with Taylor Duncan taking it the in from 27 yards out for the touchdown and the 7-0 lead.
Austin Peay (0-6, 0-2 OVC) would go three-and-out on its opening drive and had to punt the ball back to the Panthers, who started their second drive at the own 33.The Panthers would then put together a 10-play drive over the next 3:38 for their second touchdown — with Duncan taking it in from one yard out, with 8:15 left in the first quarter.
The Governors would put together a couple of first downs on it next drive, getting out to midfield, but quarterback Andrew Spivey fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Panthers Pat Wertz, at the APSU 43.
Eastern Illinois would take advantage of the turnover, two plays later, with the OVC’s leading passer Jimmy Garoppolo connecting with Shepard Little for a 43-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead, with 5:27 left in the quarter.
Garoppolo finished the night with 306 yards passing and five TD’s.
Austin Peay would have its’ first scoring opportunity of the night on its next drive, going 46 yards on nine plays down to the Panther 19, but a 36 yard field goal attempt by Chase Dunlap was wide right and gave EIU the ball back on its own 20.
The Panthers would once again score quickly, needing only 1:26 to go the 80 yards — on just six plays – including a 35-yard TD pass to the OVC’s all-time leading pass receiver Erik Lora from Garoppolo for a 27-0 lead after the missed extra point.
Lora had five catches for 133 yards and three scores.
The score would remain that way until the final two minutes of the first half, when the Panthers scored two touchdowns in a span of 50 seconds to go up 42-0 at intermission.
In the second half, it would be Austin Peay that would get on the board first, as the Governors held the Panthers on a fake punt attempt from the Eastern Illinois 48.
Quarterback Jacob Sexton would hit wide receiver Darryl Clack for a 39-yard pass play down to the Panther nine, where Tim Phillips would take it into the end zone on the next play for a touchdown, to make it 42-7.
Phillips led the Govs with 83 yards rushing.
But that would be as close as the Governors would get the rest of the night, as the Panthers would score three more touchdowns to close out the game.
Little would score his second TD of the night – a rush from one-yard out – while Garoppolo threw a four-yard touchdown to Adam Drake in the third quarter and a 66-yard TD strike to Lora in the fourth quarter.
Austin Peay returns to action October 19th, as they travel to Murray State University for a 2:00p.m. OVC contest.
