Wise Extra Point Block in Overtime gives Clarksville Academy Cougars Win over Cheatham County

Clarksville Academy CougarsClarksville, TN – With Cheatham County’s first possession in overtime, senior running back Desmond Sweatt scored from 7 yards out to give the Cubs a six point lead. Willie Pressley lined up to attempt the extra point to extend the lead to seven, but the Academy’s Connor Wise broke free from the left side of the line, leaped, and blocked the kick to keep the lead at six

The block allowed Clarksville Academy the opportunity to score a touchdown on their possession in overtime and have a chance to win the game with an extra point of their own. After a 3rd down illegal procedure call on the Academy moved the ball back to the 14, Michael Conn found Connor Thomas on a slant route over the middle for a touchdown.

Justin Hood came on to try and win the game with the extra point. Cheatham County used a time out just before his first attempt to try and ice Hood. But it was to no avail as Hood split the uprights and the Cougars walked away with a dramatic one point victory.

In a game that saw the Academy fumble the ball 3 times and Cheatham County plagued by multiple penalties and two turnovers of their own that stalled their offense, it was Michael Conn who consistently helped the Academy move the ball down field.

Conn directed a 19 play 86 yard drive that spanned 7 1/2 minutes of the first and second quarters. The drive started at the Academy’s one yard line after a Cheatham County punt rolled out of bounds just before it reached the goal line. The drive ended when Hood connected on a 31 yard field goal to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Conn rushed for 15 and passed for another 35 yards on the drive.

Cheatham County, 2-5 on the year, responded with a 12 play drive that ended when Pressley hit a 29 yard field goal to tie the score 3-3. The score would remain tied going into halftime after the Academy’s Jacob Rugen fumbled with the Cougars driving deep into Cubs territory.

Mistakes cost the Cubs in the 2nd half. Their opening drive stalled when a Cub receiver dropped a wide open 4th down pass inside the Academy’s 15 yard line. On their next possession the Cubs fumbled a snap on their own 35 and the Academy recovered with great field position. Two plays after the fumble, Conn found Wise over the middle for a 33 yard touchdown with 5:10 remaining in the 3rd quarter to give the Cougars a 10-3 lead.

Despite good field position after Pressley returned the kickoff 21 yards to their own 41, Cheatham County was again bit by the turnover bug. Matt Brown’s 3rd down pass was picked off by the Academy’s Josh Anderson at the Academy’s 9 yard line.

Cheatham County’s defense held the Cougars and forced them to punt. The Cubs once again took possession in great field position at their own 47 yard line. This time they took advantage as Sweatt took a pitch around the right side and raced 53 yards to the end zone to tie the game at 10 with 9:41 left in regulation.

After an Academy fumble and a Cub punt to the Cougars’ 11 yard line, Conn once again directed a long Academy drive. The Cougars drove to the Cubs’ 4 yard line and had first and goal with 3 1/2 minutes to go in the game.

But the Cougars failed to convert on their first 3 tries. With fourth and goal from the one yard line staring him in the face, Academy Coach Todd Hood elected to go for the touchdown instead of the field goal, and Conn fumbled the snap, turning the ball over to Cheatham County with less than 2 minutes to play.

The Cubs final drive stalled about midfield and set up the dramatic overtime finish.

Conn would finish with over 150 yards passing and 2 touchdown strikes. He also rushed for just over 50 yards. Connor Wise had a touchdown catch and 94 yards receiving.

Sweatt ended the night with 157 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Academy improved to 5-3 on the year and will travel to Houston County next week.
