APSU Governors Baseball begins Red-White World Series

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – The bottom part of the order did the damage and the White Team held on to down the Red Squad, 7-5, in the opening game of Austin Peay State University baseball team’s annual Red-White World Series, Friday night, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

After a scoreless opening three innings, the White Team scored the game’s first runs. Right fielder Tommy Hager walked to start the bottom of the fourth and, after stealing second, scored on first baseman Mason Dillon’s double to right field.

Dillon in turn scored when third baseman Griffin Ganick singled to right center, giving White a 2-0 lead.

One inning later, Dillon and Ganick combined again to drive in a pair of runs. Dillon drove in a run on a sacrifice fly while Ganick’s contribution came courtesy a double to let center, pushing White out to a 4-0 lead.

The White team seemingly put the game safely away in the sixth. Second baseman Kevin Corey and center fielder Chase Hamilton led off the frame with back-to-back singles and were moved an additional 90 feet thanks to catcher Ridge Smith’s sacrifice bunt. That sacrifice was rendered moot when designated hitter P.J. Torres drove the ball over the wall in left for a three-run home run, extending White’s lead to 7-0.

However, White’s bullpen could not close the door easily. The White Team used two relievers in the seventh and they struggled – issuing eight walks and surrendering five runs – before inducing an inning-ending fly out.

White starter Ryan Quick picked up the win after holding the Red Squad to one hit while striking out seven over four innings. Releivers Alex Belew (5th) and Jordan Harmon (6th) kept Red scoreless until the seventh.

Red reliever Zach Walton suffered the loss after allowing two runs in one inning of work. Starter Jared Carkuff tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four.

Ganick led the White Team with a 3-for-3, two RBI outing that included a double. Torres was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Dillon finished 1-for-1 with two RBI.

The Red Squad had just two hits – singles by center fielder Dylan Riner in the first inning and a fifth-inning single by Matt Meadows.

The Red-White World Series continues with a 3:00pm, Saturday contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
