Murray, KY – Austin Peay State University’s offensive woes continued as it fell to Murray State, 31-3, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference action played at Roy Stewart Stadium.
The loss drops APSU to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the OVC. Meanwhile, the Racers improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in OVC play.
The Governors were forced to go with the reserve quarterbacks Jacob Sexton, who started, and walk on Timarious Mitchell as starter Andrew Spivey missed the contest with a shoulder injury. Between the two they completed 10 of 22 passes for 60 yards, most of those coming from Mitchell.
Running back Tim Phillips was the Govs’ lone offensive highlight, carrying the ball 26 times for 123 yards while also leading the team with four catches for 28 yards.
Although the final tally doesn’t reflect it, the Governors’ defense shined for much of the day. It forced Murray State to go three-and-out on its first two possessions before Jamaal Berry broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run on a third-and-long. In fact, the Govs forced the Racers to punt on four of its first five possessions, but the offense could not take advantage of the situation.
The Racers finished the day with 384 yards total offensive, doubling the Governors total.
Junior safety Johnathan Shuler led the defense with 10 total stops while also forcing two fumbles while senior linebacker Craig Salley along with two freshmen, linebacker Antonio Turner and safety Jalen Miller, each had eight.
