Clarksville Parks and Recreation Report for October 27th, 2013

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include: Handmade Holidays Vendor Deadline, Civil War Carbine Demo, Boxing Cardio, Historic Clarksville Photography Exhibit, Winter Gym Program, and the new Maternity Aerobics.

Handmade Holidays Vendor Deadline November 1st

The Wilma Rudolph Event Center, located at Liberty Park, is currently seeking craft vendors to participate in Handmade Holidays. This year’s event is scheduled to take place November 16th, 2013 from 10:00am to 6:00pm and November 17th, 2013 from noon to 5:00pm.

Visitors can shop from over 50 local artists featuring handmade and handcrafted items, enjoy door prizes, concessions and free admission!

Vendor cost is $100.00 and includes a 10×10 space, table and two chairs. Vendors interested in participating can pick up an application form at the Clarksville Parks and Recreation office or download it at www.cityofclarksville.com/handmade . All applications must be received by November 1st, 2013 to be considered.

Civil War Carbine Demo coming to Fort Defiance

A demonstration of Civil War weaponry is planned for November 2nd from 10:00am to 5:00pm, at the Fort Defiance Civil War Park & Interpretive Center. The event will begin at 10:00am with the first carbine demonstration taking place at 10:30am and continuing every half hour.

Gregory Wernke will demonstrate firing techniques of numerous Civil War carbines and repeating rifles. There will be educational talks about Civil War small arms and tactics, the life of Johnny Reb, Billy Yank and women during the war, as well as shelters, equipment, rations, and Camp Life.

Boxing Cardio

Punch and kick away the pounds at the Burt-Cobb Community Center’s Boxing Cardio class! Boxing Cardio is open to youth and adults ages 9 years and older. For just one hour of blood-pumping cardio, participants can burn anywhere from 800-1,000 calories and relieve the stress of daily life in this class held Mondays at 7:00pm, beginning November 4th.

Boxing Cardio combines cardiovascular activity with weights, strength training and rhythm coordination. Classes are $3.00 per class with a Community Center ID.

Historic Clarksville Photography Exhibit

Photographs featuring Clarksville from the 1950’s will be on display at the Fort Defiance Interpretive Center, November 4th-30th. The public is invited to view the exhibit and help identify landmarks and people depicted in the historic photographs.

The Fort Defiance Interpretive Center is open Monday – Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday, 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Admission is free.

Winter Gym Program

The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department and the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System have partnered to provide a winter gymnasium program at Byrns-Darden Elementary School.

Beginning November 12th, youth and adults ages 13 and up are welcome to participate in FREE play basketball every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evening from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, through March 26th, 2014.

Participants register on-site. Children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Maternity Aerobics- NEW!

The Indoor Aquatic Center (IAC) is excited to offer a class for expectant mothers! Did you know, water provides emotional and physical security for pregnant women to get a safe work out and enjoy a feeling of weightlessness?

This class combines a low-impact aerobic exercise with optional exercises for toning trouble areas. Classes are held every Monday, Wednesday & Friday evening from 5:30pm-6:15pm. Cost is $2.00 with a membership, $4.00 without. Register online today at recpro.cityofclarksville.com.
