Tennessee Titans get road win over St. Louis Rams 28-21

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – Chris Johnson broke lose for 150 yards on 23 carries to propel the Tennessee Titans to a 28-21 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Johnson also had 2 touchdown runs on the day including a 19 yard scamper late in the fourth quarter that sealed the win for the Titans.

“CJ is a special runner, and we think we have a good offensive line, but we just weren’t having results. To watch it finally come together, I didn’t think it was going to take this long, but I am glad it happened. He had a game like we thought he could have, I thought he ran very well,” stated Titans head coach Mike Munchak.

Tennessee welcomed Shonn Greene back to the lineup Sunday. Greene has been out since the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers where he had four carries before hurting his knee. Greene took his first carry of the game 5 yards for a touchdown on the Titans opening drive. It was also Greene’s first touchdown as a Titan.

“Obviously we ran the ball the best we have all year. I think we are excited about, talked about, bragged about having RB Shonn Greene running with CJ. We thought that does make a difference, I think you saw that today. Third-and-1, third-and-2, short yardages, today we were good at that and those were areas we struggled in,” said Munchak.

The game was tied at 21 late in the fourth quarter. With 3:05 remaining, Rams quarterback Kellen Clemens was sacked at the St. Louis 17 by Jurrell Casey who also stripped the ball away. Derrick Morgan recovered the ball for the Titans. This setup Johnson’s 19 yard touchdown run.

“I came through with a double swipe, and the ball came free. I knew we needed a big play for the team and I had to come up with it and I got the job done so we could take the lead,” said Jurrell Casey.

In the final minute, the Rams took the ball down to the Titans 26, but on fourth down, Clemens throws a ball to the corner of the end zone just out of reach of Austin Pettis.

The loss is three in a row for St. Louis (3-6). Tennessee brings it’s record even at 4-4 and ended a three game losing streak.

For Tennessee, Jake Locker was 12 of 22 for 185 yards and ran for 10 yards and a touchdown. He also had 2 interceptions on the day. Chris Johnson had 150 yards and 2 touchdowns on 23 attempts. Johnson also hauled in 3 passes for 20 yards. Shonn Greene got 38 yards on 9 attempts and a touchdown. Greene caught 1 pass for 28 yards.

Kendall Wright led all Titans with 3 receptions for 69 yards including a career long 45 yard catch. Tight end Delanie Walker caught 2 balls for 13 yards. Nate Washington was held without a reception ending his streak of 85 games with a catch.

Kellen Clemens was 20 of 25 for 210 yards and a touchdown for St. Louis. He also had 1 run for 16 yards. Chris Givens caught 4 balls for 55 yards. Former Titan Jared Cook hauled in 3 balls for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Rookie Zac Stacy ran for 127 yards on 27 carries and had two touchdowns. Stacy also caught 6 passes for 51 yards. This was Stacy’s second straight 100-yard game.

“For a lot of reasons. We all knew how important this game was for us after losing three tough football games in a row and after starting 3-1,” said Munchak. “We had a week off to think about and work on that. We came into a tough place to play and to a team that also needed to win in a bad way.”

“Yes this is a big win for us and we just knew that we need to find a way to win. We haven’t won in over 30 days. That is a long time. I thought the guys really fought hard today, it wasn’t always how we like it, but I thought they hung together. We continued to make plays. When you run the ball as well as we did today, you are going to win a lot of football games,” stated Munchak

The Tennessee Titans (4-4) return home to LP Field Sunday, November 10th to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-8). Kickoff is at 12:00pm CT.
