APSU Governors Basketball opens season against Oakland City Mighty Oaks Saturday

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – This is the fourth third meeting between Austin Peay State University, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Oakland City, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

The Governors own a 3-0 mark in the series, and claimed the most recent matchup, December 5th, 2012, by a 88-63 count.

This is Dave Loos’ 24th season as Austin Peay head coach and he is 371-333 at APSU–the winningest basketball coach in Ohio Valley Conference history–and 453-386 all-time in his 28th season as a college head coach.

For the first time since the 1996 season Dave Loos will be only the Austin Peay basketball coach. He stepped down as APSU Athletics Director last April.

APSU was picked to finish third behind Southeast Missouri and Murray State in the OVC West Division in the preseason poll.

Travis BetranSince 1993-94, Austin Peay has finished at .500 or above in the OVC for 19 of the last 20 seasons, that one season being 2012-13.

In 2013, the Governors failed to reach the OVC tourney for the first time in Dave Loos’ coaching career. They have appeared in 28 of the last 29 OVC tourneys.

Senior guard Travis Betran and senior forward Will Triggs were named Preseason All-OVC as voted by the conference coaches and sports information directors.

As a freshman center Chris Horton broke APSU’s single-season record for blocked shots with 100.

Will TriggsOakland City captured its second straight National Christian College National Invitational Tournament title last season, defeating Virginia University-Lynchburg and going 24-4 in the process.

Oakland City played another Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Illinois in an exhibition game last Saturday, losing 73-64. Kendall Wittmer came off the bench to lead the Mighty Oaks with 18 points, including four three pointers. Matt Lucas added 15 for a team that connected on 9-of-16 from three-point range.
