APSU Provost Lecture Series to feature Geology professor Kallina Dunkle November 14th

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University geology professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.

Dr. Kallina Dunkle, APSU assistant professor of geology, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, November 14th, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. Her lecture will be about preferential flow paths in complex hydrogeologic settings.

Preferential flow paths are connected units of high hydraulic conductivity, such as sand bodies within a clay matrix. They are important to both groundwater flow and contaminant transport because they allow for faster movement of fluids than the surrounding matrix.

Examples of preferential flow paths in glacially-deposited aquitards and karst terrains will demonstrate the importance and difficulty of detecting these pathways.  Additionally, Dunkle will present a hybrid approach for detecting preferential flow paths, including multiple-point geostatistics and groundwater flow modeling.

All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Dunkle earned her Ph.D. in geology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in August 2012. She received her M.S. degree in geology from that university in 2008 and her B.S. degree in geology from Oklahoma State University in 2005.  Her research interests include hydrogeology, environmental geology and quaternary geology, in particular groundwater flow modeling.

Sessions of the Provost Lecture Series can be viewed live. Past lectures are available to view on iTunesU. Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303.
