Morehead, KY – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team had top-seed Morehead State on the ropes but could not find the finishing blow and dropped a five-set decision (25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 4-15), Friday night, in the Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Championship’s semifinal round at Wetherby Gymnasium.
Senior Lauren Henderson and junior Jada Stotts each had seven kills while junior Hillary Plybon chipped in six kills. That trio also combined on seven of the team’s 10 blocks.
Morehead State (26-7) climbed back into the match with a gritty win in the third set as neither team’s offense was effective, the Eagles hitting nine kills at .077 clip while the Lady Govs were held to nine kills and a .000 pace. The Eagles offense warmed up in the fourth set with 13 kills and a .216 attack percentage in a wire-to-wire victory.
Morehead State continued to build on its momentum, going errorless in the fifth set and needing just six kills to secure a 15-4 victory. The Lady Govs offense swooned to a four-kill, eight-error performance in the final set.
After its quick start, Austin Peay’s offense could not find its rhythm after the break. The Lady Govs recorded only 28 kills in the final three sets but committed 27 attack errors (.010 attack percentage). In addition, after 10 blocks in the first two sets, the Lady Govs recorded only four blocks the match’s remainder.
“The team is heartbroken,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “We had the match in our grasp in let it slip away. We committed too many errors in the final sets. Morehead State gained momentum as the match went on and we couldn’t hold them off.”
Henderson led Austin Peay’s offense with an 18-kill, six-block performance in her final career outing. Stotts recorded 11 kills and six blocks. Plybon chipped in nine kills and six blocks.
Aryn Bohannon led Morehead State with a 17-kill performance. Alex Fitzmorris chipped in 10 kills.
