Clarksville, TN – Northwest High School’s boys basketball team fell behind 7-0 after the first two minutes of play, November 22nd at Willard Ross Memorial Gymnasium, to the LaVergne High School Wolverines and never recovered in a 86-62 loss.
LaVergne (3-0), one of the favorites to win District 7-AAA, exploded out of the gate right away getting a game-opening layup from Charles Sutton just seven seconds into the game.
Northwest (1-4) on the other hand struggled with turnovers and missed shots in the game’s opening minutes, with the Wolverines adding a free throw and back-to-back buckets from J.J. Horner to build that 7-0 lead before the Vikings JaRyan Young knocked down a jumper for Northwest at the 5:46 mark of the opening quarter.But there was no turning back the Wolverines on this night, as they ran off 13 of the next 15 points – including seven straight by Marquis Johns – to build a 20-4 lead with 1:20 left in the quarter.
Johns would lead all scorers with 21 points.
The Vikings would get four straight points form Tramon Moore to cut the margin back to 12 points, 20-8, but a final free throw in the final 10 seconds to give LaVergne a 21-8 advantage after the first eight minutes of play.
Moore led Northwest in scoring with 20 points.
Things didn’t get much better early on in the second quarter for the Vikings, as the Wolverines opened up the period with a 12-3 run to build its biggest lead of the night at 22 points, 33-11, with 3:38 left before intermission.
Northwest would finally get it footing over the final 3:21 of the first half, outscoring LaVergne 12-8 – including seven of those points coming from Ramont Lewis – to go into halftime down 41-23.
That little scoring spurt to end the first half carried over into the third quarter for Northwest, as they came out of the locker room on fire, outscoring the Wolverines 15-6 – including eight straight at one point – to cut the deficit down to nine, 47-38, with 4:16 left in the quarter.
Northwest wouldn’t get any closer than 14 points in the fourth quarter, with LaVergne leading by as many as 25 points in the period before settling for the 86-62 final.
