Clarksville, TN – One week after an admittedly sub-par effort on both ends of the court, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team put together a complete effort in an 81-60 victory against Central Arkansas, Saturday night, at the Dunn Center.
One week ago, Austin Peay (3-3) shot just 27 percent in the final 31 minutes in a loss to Evansville. The Lady Govs flipped the script in Saturday’s win, making 70.7 percent (29-of-41) from the floor in the game’s final 30 minutes.Austin Peay saw Central Arkansas take its only lead, 13-12, at the 10:18 mark of the first half before it began its half-ending burst. The Lady Govs closed the half on a 23-9 run that saw them make 10-of-15 from the floor and take a 35-22 halftime lead.
Central Arkansas (5-2) trimmed the lead to nine points less than two minutes into the second half. Yet Austin Peay countered with a 13-3 run to build a 19-point, 48-29, lead with 14:36 remaining. They would not be threatened the game’s remainder as they converted an impressive 19-of-26 shots (73.1 percent) in the half.
Defensively, the Lady Govs held Central Arkansas (5-2) to just 35.1 percent (20-of-57) shooting for the game. It was only the second time this season Central Arkansas was held below 40 percent shooting in a contest, both resulting in losses.
Individually, sophomore Tiasha Gray led Austin Peay with a career-high 28 points on 13-of-20 shooting. Sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha also finished with a career-high 14 points and career-high tying eight rebounds. Junior Kristen Stainback and freshman Tearra Banks each had 10 points.
Terai Sadler led Central Arkansas with 16 points. Maggie Proffitt chipped in 13 points.
Austin Peay will close out its five-game homestand with an 11:00am, Wednesday contest against Middle Tennessee.
