Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay returns to the road for the first time in more than three weeks when it travels north for a now 6:00pm (CT), Saturday contest against Xavier at the Cintas Center. The start time for Saturday’s contest was recently pushed back due to a facility conflict.
The Lady Govs have alternated wins and losses to start the 2013-14 campaign, continuing the streak with a 69-43 loss to Middle Tennessee, Wednesday.Austin Peay never led in the contest but trailed by just four points entering the halftime break. However, the Lady Govs could not find their shooting touch in the second half en route to shooting a season-low 30.5 percent from the floor.
Head coach Carrie Daniels is in her eighth season with a young squad dominated by sophomores and freshmen. The Lady Govs starting lineup has been composed of a senior, junior and three sophomores in the season’s first seven games with three freshman seeing significant action off the bench.
The Lady Govs last road contest was a November 12th affair at Southern Illinois. Saturday’s game is the first of two contests for APSU in the Ohio River Valley, it travels to nationally-ranked Louisville in seven days. The Lady Govs went 2-3 during their recently completed five-game homestand with wins against Trevecca (98-77) and Central Arkansas (81-60).
Austin Peay is a young squad in 2013-14 with five sophomores and five freshman dominating the 13-woman roster. Austin Peay’s 2013-14 schedule features 11 games against nine teams that reached the 2012 postseason, including national runner-up Louisville.
Xavier, which joined the reformulated Big East this season, opened its two-game homestand with a 70-66 victory against Murray State, Wednesday night. It was a balanced scoring effort in the win, with four players scoring 10 or more points.
Shatyra Hawkes was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 13.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game… Hawkes leads Xavier in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game and is one of three players averaging 10 or more points this season.
