Austin Peay State University Lady Govs Basketball lose to Xavier Musketeers 72-59

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUCincinnati, OH – Twice Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team trailed by more than 10 points and while it recovered the first time it could not the second and fell to Xavier 72-59, Saturday night, at Cintas Center.

Austin Peay (3-5), which suffered consecutive losses for the first time in 2013-14, got off to cold starts in both halves. Xavier opened with the game’s first eight points but Austin Peay was able to keep the lead from growing larger.

However, the Musketeers would use an 8-0 run – aided by a three consecutive baskets off steals – to gain an 11-point, 26-15 lead with 8:02 remaining.

Beth RatesXavier (5-4) went ice cold from there, failing to make a field goal the half’s final 8:46. Austin Peay slowly reeled the game back in, with freshman Beth Rates providing eight points during a half-ending 15-3 run to take a 30-28 lead into halftime.

The Musketeers came out of the halftime break and seemingly could not miss the net. Xavier made 10 of their first 13 shots in the half as part of a 23-5 run and led 53-35 just 6:30 into the frame. The Xavier lead hit 21 points, 60-39, with 8:38 remaining after Jenna Crittendon hit a three-pointer.

The Lady Govs would score the game’s next 10 points on a run started by a Rates jumper and aided by a pair of baskets by sophomore Tiasha Gray and baskets by sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha and Alexis Hardaway. The burst cut the Xavier deficit to 11 points, 60-49, in just three minutes.

Nicole OlszewskiXavier finally stemmed the Austin Peay run with a three-pointer by Shatyra Hawkes and put an end to the threat with a 4-0 run that pushed the lead back to 16 points with 3:45 remaining.

Rates finished with a team-best 13 points and had eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Senior Nicole Olszewski added 11 points in front of her friends and family who made the trip from Pickerington. Junior Kristen Stainback added 11 points and Gray finished with 10 points.

Crittendon finished with a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double performance. Ashley Wanninger added 25 points, thanks to a 5-of-8 performance from three-point range.

Austin Peay will take the upcoming week off for finals before returning to action with a 7:00pm, Saturday contest at nationally-ranked Louisville.
