APSU Lady Govs Basketball loses 108-53 to Louisville Cardinals

 

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSULouisville, KY - Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team had few answers in a 108-53 loss to No. 7 Louisville, Saturday, at the KFC YUM! Center.

Austin Peay (3-6) challenged Louisville early, junior Kristen Stainback scoring five straight points to cap a 7-2 run that gave APSU a 7-6 lead 2:28 into the contest.

Louisville (10-1) responded with the game’s next 10 points, including a pair of baskets by Asia Taylor, to build a nine-point, 16-7 lead just two minutes later.

Stainback would hit another three-pointer at the 14:42 mark to end the Louisville run. She scored eight of Austin Peay’s first 10 points.

The Cardinals again pieced together a 12-2 run, pushing the lead to 16 points with 11:25 remaining in the half. Austin Peay pushed back with a three-pointer by freshman April Rivers and a basket by Tearra Banks, cutting the lead to 11 points, 28-17, one minute later.

Louisville broke the game open courtesy a 22-9 burst over the games next nine minutes, build a 28-point, 54-26, lead with 1:23 left. Austin Peay would close the half on an 8-2 run as Banks, Rivers, Stainback and sophomore Tiasha Gray each hit baskets in the final minute-plus. Louisville held a 56-34 lead at the halftime break.

The Cardinals wasted no time extending its lead in the second half. They opened the frame with a 15-5 run as the lead reached 32 points, 71-39, in less than five minutes. Louisville would not look back after the half-opening burst and later capitalized on an APSU scoring drought that lasted more than six minutes to build a 50-point margin.

Stainback led Austin Peay with 14 points and was the only APSU player to reach double-digit scoring territory. Sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha added eight points – all in the second half. Banks chipped in a six-point, eight-rebound performance in a return to her hometown.

Shoni Schimmel led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Cortnee Walton added 13 points.

Austin Peay returns home for a 7:00pm, Wednesday contest against Chattanooga.
