Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team got off to a good start but could not maintain the momentum in an 81-70 loss to Chattanooga, Wednesday night, at the Dunn Center.
Austin Peay (3-7) head coach Carrie Daniels put forth a different starting five for the first time this season with three freshmen – guard April Rivers and forwards Tearra Banks and Beth Rates – getting their first starting nod. Banks responded by scoring the Lady Govs first five points as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead. The Lady Govs would lead for the bulk of the game’s first 17 minutes, building as much as a five point lead, 24-19, six minutes into the contest. Meanwhile, APSU’s defense held Chattanooga to 8-of-18 shooting (44.4 percent) in the first 13 minutes.
However, Chattanooga (9-3) warmed up in the final seven minutes, making all eight of its field goal attempts in a 21-7 half-ending run. Meanwhile, Austin Peay missed eight consecutive shots before sophomore Tiasha Gray hit a jumper with three seconds left to set the halftime score a 38-29 in the Lady Mocs favor.
The Lady Mocs extended their advantage to 22 points, 73-51, with 5:59 left in the game. Yet, Austin Peay ended the game with a 19-8 run, to cut that lead in half before the final horn. Gray scored 11 points in that final run.
